I've been feeling down last few weeks and I realized that blogging no longer brings me the joy it used to.
When I started blogging in October (7 months ago) I had such a passion for blogging and sharing my life and my thoughts with complete strangers who were willing to listen and lend a helping hand if needed.
Many of these strangers became my friends and loyal supporters of my blogs. They were cheering me on as I was meeting challenges in life and trying to find happiness. They were there to cry with me, to laugh with me and to share their lives with me. I was so exited every morning to turn on my laptop and see all the wonderful comments. I was so excited to go over and read their blogs to return and cultivate the friendships and support I've received.
Over last few months I noticed that many of these wonderful people are no longer. Majority of them quit blogging for many reasons or they decided to go different direction with their blogs.
Many blogs I used to love to read turned into giveaways, reviews and meme blogs. Many bloggers started actual communities and forums.
Now, don't get me wrong I am not judging anyone and I still follow and support as much as I can. Everyone has the right to do what makes them happy. We all need to progress and follow our dreams and goals. I myself do some giveaways, reviews and write few posts here and there to make some extra money, but what makes me sad is that I felt into a trap.
I felt into a trap of wanting to get back my friends and gain some fast followers. I wanted to belong to certain "tribes" so I don't feel like the "unpopular" girl in high school.
I listen to some of my followers advising me to join certain memes and groups to get more comments.
Well, in my search of belonging and in my desire of getting comments I lost myself....I sold out....I stopped being me. I started writing my posts to fit into certain memes and certain blog rolls just to get people to come over. That is not what I wanted to do when I started my blog.
The worst part is that I didn't really gain more friends. I lost few friends and certain people I thought I connected with no longer come by because I am not part of their "tribe" their "group" or their "meme".
I never was one to follow trends. I always was an individual and didn't care where I belonged. I loved everyone and could get along with everybody. So why the sudden urge to be popular and to belong? I don't know.....
All I know is that I need to be me again. I need to write for me and not care if anyone reads it. I need to reconnect with my friends I lost due to me selling out. I need my husband and my best friend read my blog again. I need to write what I feel and when I feel it.
I have a suspicion that this post will cause me to lose even more followers, but such is life and I need to feel good about myself.
I will join memes and blog rolls, but it will be on my terms. I will join certain memes when I have a post appropriate for linking up. I will write for me and not for comments.
I am done feeling like a sell-out.
I am back.....hear me roar.
P.S. I do have a blog where I post in hopes of making it my home business and bring me some money and other perks. There is nothing wrong with that. Just in case you though I am against making money with blogs. Occasionally I will promote certain business and products on my personal blog, but it will because I wanted to.

You may lost some followers but you just gained me. I may not be 'much' but I 100% agree. I have been thinking much about this. I don't want people following simply because it's friday follow or to enter a giveaway, that's okay to bring traffic in but what I want to stick is quality people who bring their heart to the table. I too am going to do a similar post. maybe on Monday?- - - take care! Bree @ www.breebee.com
I totally agree. I started my baking blog for me. Then I started getting sucked into the thrill of getting followers and such. But I am over that. My blog is for me, and people reading it is a bonus.
You rock! I will still follow you!
hey sweetie! i love you and have been faithfully following you from your humble beginnings. Oh dear, I hope I am not one of the blogs you are speaking of. (Yes, I am doing "memes" but am using the writing platforms as a means for self discovery) I'm glad you are planning to be you again! That's the Bibi we love!
Oh sweet friend I am jumping up and down screaming BRAVO to you right now!!!!!!! If I were there I would give you a BIG HUG!!!!! You know I have posted on this in the past so you know this is EXACTLY how I feel!!! When did blogs stop being blogs?!? There used to be so many more blogs I enjoyed reading but that list has drastically dwindled. Why? Too many people felt the lure of the almighty dollar. They felt the lure of being popular. I think there are a lot of bloggers out there that think if they get enough people to follow them and they do enough giveaways and get the most PR they will be the next Pioneer Woman or Dooce. Maybe one of them will be.....but MILLIONS of them won't. I say lets put the blog back in blogging!!! Corporate greed and sponsors be damned!!! :-)
Also, I have gotten away from things like SITS and Friday Follow and stuff like that. I felt like people were only coming to my blog to get me to come to their blog and help get their numbers up. You know what else? The comments were so impersonal..."stopping by from sits...please come follow me...blah blah blah!" Hello?!?! Did they even read what I posted?!? Also, I was contacted by CSN Stores like a gajillion other bloggers have been. I turned them down. I want to do things on my own terms. I do the occasional giveaway on my blog but I actually purchase or make what I am giving away. I don't want to be reined in by corporate rules and disclosure crap. My blog = MY WAY!!!
Whew! I know this has gotten VERY long but it is a topic I feel passionate about. And I will always follow you, my friend! I love your blog! And it makes me so happy to hear you say you are going to do things your way!!! Rock on sista!!!!!!
I keep my blog simple. I don't do giveaways and reviews. I stick to my writing. I'm glad you're going back to when you first started...good for you!
I'll be reading!:)
What a honest post!I have been visiting your blog since December and I've always enjoyed to read your posts and also your honest comments on my site. And of course you are the one who will decide what to write about on your own blog lol. Can't agree more!!!
Amen girl! Of course, I think I found you through a meme blog hop or something. I have never cared for blogs that are ALL reviews and such. They bore me to tears. I long for other blogs similar to mine. Where I write about my life and get more personal...even sharing pics. I feel like an outsider to most of these groups and clics too. I do an occasional meme but it is just the fun stuff that usually reveals more about me. I will be here reading...as usual!
This is a great post. I hadn't really thought about it before. I do get a kick out of seeing new followers, but I enjoy the ones that I get because they have read, commented and decided to join, not the ones who come over from Friday Follow and just say "stopping by, come follow me", without actually reading my post.
Whenever I come across a blog that seems to be all about reviews and giveaways, I tend to move on.
Having said that, I really had a lot of fun with this week's Aloha Friday--thanks for commenting BTW! So I think that there's some value in participating in memes, if that's what you want to do. They sometimes get the creative juices flowing.
I read Dooce faithfully, and you know what? I think she just writes what's in her heart, uses advertising to make her income, and she promotes herself on blog directories and such. No memes, giveaways, reviews or communities, (other than momversation and her own community).
I think I will always be a fan of yours. Your writing style just keeps getting better and better, so I'm glad that you are going to stick with it, but are going to do it on your terms.
Big cheers for you!
Shelly
I hate memes anyway.
I completely understand what you mean. The great thing about blogging is you can reinvent yourself whenever you want or if you want to go back to previous format you can do that too. There are so many blog readers out there, you are bound to connect with a great group of people again. I also think that re-evaluating why you blog and how you blog is important in growing as a blogger and as a writer. I think you are on the right track now and I look forward to reading more of the real you!
What the heck is a meme? I don't know, but I am sure I want nothing to do with it.
Just write what you feel and I will read it.
Bree,
thank you so much for your comment. I went over to your blog and it is lovely. I can't wait to get to know you better.
Angela,
yes, it is easy to get sucked into the numbers game.It is almost like a popularity contest and none of us want to be the ugly duckling. Some of us like me lose prospective of what we want and why we're doing it.
Polly,
I love you too. You are one of my oldest and dearest friends and followers. The memes you are part of truly are a part of self discovery and I love to come over and get inspired by you. Your Haiku is amazing.
Kristen,
you are one of the sweetest and most caring people I met in this blog world. It's funny, but when I was writing this post I had you in the back of my mind as well as all the other people I felt I let down besides myself.
I don't understand the meme thing either. Is it a blog all about yourself? meme??? Whatever! I love your blog and I didn't even know you sold out. Just be you. Write what makes YOU feel good. Isn't that what blogs are for? Or am I clueless on this area too as well as everything else in life that deals with popularity. I'v never been, so don't know what I'm missing.
Yonca,
you are another one of the people I love because you are who you are and your blog is so real and so comfortable. You keep coming over and commenting no matter what I write and I love that about you the most.
Melanie,
you are one of my followers I've been neglecting due to the temporary lack of judgement.I do love your blogs and I will be much better friend.I promise.
Pam,
glad you found me. I did find few great people thanks to the memes and again I have nothing against different memes and I think they are great for people who are into that. I myself will still do the occasional meme and I will get some friends like you out of them I know.
Shelly,
I'll always be a fan of yours as well and I will join you on some memes for fun. I will come over and comment if you're doing a meme and I am not. It just I got so overwhelmed and memes were taking over who I am.
Boob,
what can I say....you rock and I love your blog. You are one funny girl.
I AGREE with everything that ALL these wonderful women wrote. In fact I am going to go and visit and follow their blogs- they all seem real and that is what I want. I never thought I was naive but I am guessing I must me. I am clueless when it comes to tribes/cliques/ what have ya. I just share my recipes, my garden success and failures, my toddler adventures and just my randomness! I thank-you for reading my nonsence and for being YOU. You were one of the 1st people to ever comment on my blog! Thanks for your support!
I will read and as your 1st comment said I may not come with a posse but I will be here!!
xoxo, kat
I recently posted a similar post regarding my own blog. Over time, I felt I was becoming "a deal blog". Not my original intent at all. There are so many better blogs for that info. People who can put the proper time in. So, I decided I was going back to writing for myself so to speak!
Yay. It's gotta be about you. If it isn't fun for you, then you gotta make it fun. And I am a pretty new follower! I'll be back! Keep on blogging.
I've been struggling with keeping a balance myself. I don't want the whole review/giveaway thing to take over my blog but now I have a lot of them lined up and need to get them out there. Then you feel the pressure to get the comments, entries, followers to keep up with it all.
it doesn't work anyway, I find the more people that follow, the less that comment.
I hate it when I sit down and write a personal post and no one responds, that is the reason we started blogging in the first place. I didn't even know there was such a thing as this whole PR world.
anyways, I think most of us know how you feel and don't blame you one bit, do what feels right to you!
You have gotten some great feedback I see. I posted your post on my blog as a very nice intro to my own adjustments. (Please let me know if you would prefer I did not do this, your sharing is personal after all). I also agree with some previous comments, I will be very selective at the friday follow and such- I want quality not quantity. Cheers to change and getting to know you more!

Thanks for this! I feel the same way! And it looks like lots of people agree. Hope this makes up for the lost followers...it's too bad because they're the ones losing out on your great blog!
Yay! Sounds awesome- you're being true to yourself.
I just started a separate review/giveaway blog for reasons much like yours. I started because I wanted a place to write. So, now, my main blog will just be writing and the other stuff will go on the other blog.
I do memes quite a bit, but I try to take whatever I want to write anyway and see if I can make it fit into a meme that is out there. Make sense?
I was afraid you were going to say that you were going to stop blogging. That would have made this girl very sad :(
I see where you are coming from. I understand that there are SAHM's who are blogging as a way to stay home with their children and I totally support that, but I like to read real posts from real people, like you.
I have wondered about my blog as well. I am new to this, and don't get the time to post everyday and worried about what my followers would think. After reading this post, you opened my eyes. My blog is for me, not for them. If they want to read it great! If they don't like I dont' get a post in every day, then who cares!
Thanks for the eye opening, honest post!! You have helped me! :)
I photo tagged you on my blog. Check it out and play along!
Happy Monday!!
I can absolutely relate! Good for you going back to when blogging was fun for you. I like what 2Wired2Tired wrote about blogging enabling you to reinvent yourself - that's sort of what I've got going on over at my blog...a reinvention! :)
Well you certainly got a lot of comments on this one! I don't think you're losing any one - and maybe gaining some. Blogging is such a fluid thing. I have found that many people who I thought were regular readers go their own way and others take their place. I try not to be too concerned with numbers because there's just no way to keep writing in a style or way that isn't me. It's draining. Just keep on keeping on!
Wow great post...I missed it due to blog slacking and a busy work schedule...I hear ya.. and agree ..Ive been contacted by many companies and I just delete them...If I do a giveaway it will be something I have that I want to give..or art or something...I did friday follow once and never again..I met a few that stuck around as well as found a few i really liked...I have very ecclectic taste and like a lot of different..I never fit into a category and never will...that's whats great about blogging..as of now i dont know what direction Im going...but ill figure it out...and BTW...I always like it here...youre awesome..!
I love your roar! :)
